Malkangiri,30th Aug 2025:The district is facing a urea shortage as farmers require 15,000 metric tons of fertilizer, but so far only 8,930 tons have been supplied. Due to this shortage, farmers have repeatedly rushed to local lamp stores and dealers in frustration. The situation has caused unrest among farmers in various parts of the district.
In Malkangiri, at Shikhapali Chowk and Mathuli lamp stores, farmers locked the gates and even blocked the roads in protest. Farmers cited that while urea is not reaching them in time, black-market prices are rising, worsening the situation.
According to the District Chief Agriculture Officer, Dilli Ranjan Mahalika, this kharif season, paddy is being cultivated on 75,660 hectares in the district, which is over 3,000 hectares more than last year. Arrangements were made to supply 10,000 tons of urea to the district, but till now only 8,930 metric tons have been delivered.
Out of this, 3,659 metric tons of urea have already been distributed to farmers through eight lamp stores located in Malkangiri, Kalimela, Padia, Shikhapali, Korukonda, Kudumulugumma, Gobindpali, and other areas. The state agriculture department has been requested to supply the remaining 5,000 tons at the earliest.
Officials hope the urea shortage will soon be resolved, and farmers will receive the required fertilizer in time.
