Balangir, 22nd Aug 2025: All medicines sold in the country—whether imported or manufactured domestically, generic or branded—are required to meet the same quality standards as prescribed under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940 of the Government of India.
According to information obtained by RTI activist Hemanta Panda from the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), the law does not provide separate rules or distinct definitions for generic and branded medicines. Legally, both types of medicines are of equal quality.
However, there exists a huge difference in the prices of generic and branded medicines. Panda has stated that he will draw the Prime Minister’s attention to this matter.
