Diarrhoea Outbreak Spreads in Narasinghpur, Banki; 50 Fall Ill in Gholapur

Narasinghpur: An outbreak of diarrhoea is spreading in the Narasinghpur and Banki blocks of Cuttack district. In Dimiria village under Narasinghpur block, the family of a woman alleged that she died due to diarrhoea. Similarly, the number of affected persons in Gholapur village under Banki block has increased to 50. Medical teams have reached both villages, distributing medicines and raising awareness about maintaining hygiene.

In Dimiria village of Nuapatana panchayat under Narasinghpur block, a ward member, Shantilata Nayak (55), reportedly died after contracting diarrhoea on Sunday. Her family members took her to Narasinghpur Community Health Center for treatment, but she passed away on Monday morning while under medical care. Other family members – Debasita Nayak (27), Biswajit Nayak (12), and Abhijit Nayak (8) – who also fell ill due to diarrhoea have recovered and returned home.

During Debasnana Purnima, Shantilata’s brother, retired village guard Surasen Nayak (70), died due to kidney disease. Her death has cast a shadow of grief over the locality. However, the health department has clarified that Shantilata’s death was not caused by diarrhoea, but due to a heart attack.

Dr. Abhijit from Narasinghpur Community Health Center stated that Shantilata was recovering after being admitted for diarrhoea. Unfortunately, while resting, she was given water which may have led to fluid entering her airway, causing a cardiac arrest.
