New Delhi: Starting July 1, vehicles older than 15 years will no longer be allowed to refuel in Delhi. As part of a new initiative to phase out end-of-life vehicles from the roads, the Delhi government has introduced this unique measure. Guidelines have already been issued in this regard, and all fuel stations have been instructed to stop dispensing fuel to old vehicles.
According to the directions of the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM), the rule will take effect from July 1. Under this regulation, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years will be denied fuel at petrol pumps. This rule will apply regardless of the state of registration of the vehicle.
All fuel stations are required to clearly display notices that fuel will not be provided to old vehicles. Signboards indicating this rule must be placed at all filling stations. Employees of these stations will also receive training regarding the implementation of these new rules.
In addition, petrol pumps will be equipped with automatic number plate recognition systems (ANPR) to identify the vehicle’s age from its registration number. If a vehicle is found to be operating beyond its permissible age limit, a real-time audio alert will be triggered.
Regular inspections will be conducted to ensure compliance with the new rules. Fuel stations that fail to follow these regulations may face fines. Moreover, petrol pumps will be required to report old vehicles arriving for fuel to the Transport Department.
The Supreme Court had earlier directed that petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years must be removed from the roads.
