Deadly Brain-Eating Amoeba Kills 19 in Kerala, Health Dept Issues High Alert

Kerala,, 20th Sept 2025:  Kerala is currently on high alert following a rise in cases of Primary Amoebic Meningoencephalitis (PAM) — a rare but deadly brain infection caused by the amoeba Naegleria fowleri.

The state government has issued a high alert concerning the amoeba threat.

Health officials across Kerala have been instructed to remain vigilant.

Cases have been reported from various districts in the state, with the affected individuals ranging in age from a 3-month-old infant to a 91-year-old adult.

This infection is caused by Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the “brain-eating amoeba”.

In 2025 alone, 69 infection cases have been reported in Kerala, out of which 19 people have died.

This alarming situation has raised serious public health concerns across the state.
