Koraput8th Nov 2025: Dangar Rani flax has flourished after the rains, showing its golden-yellow crop. Its beauty enhances the hilly landscapes of Koraput, captivating tourists. Flax not only adds to the district’s charm but has also strengthened the economic backbone of Koraput’s farmers. With demand both domestically and internationally yielding three times the profit, more and more farmers are being drawn to this crop. This year, cultivation has spread over nearly 51,000 acres, which is 5,000 acres more than last year. With the increase in cultivation, the Agriculture Department is concerned about opening new markets.
The district’s climate is suitable for flax. Sloping lands, low water requirements, comparatively less maintenance, and higher profitability have increased farmers’ interest. The crop is being cultivated on sloped lands across blocks like Koraput, Pattangi, Lamtaput, Semiliguda, Borigumma, Dashmantpur, Laxmipur, Narayanpatna, and Bandhugaon. The cost of sowing about 2 kg of seeds per acre is roughly 6,000 rupees. If the crop succeeds, it yields over 3 quintals per acre. Its oil has many medicinal properties, leading to high demand domestically and abroad. Farmers sell the flax after keeping some for personal use.
At the market, businessmen purchase it for 80–90 rupees per kg, and 3 quintals are sold for over 24,000 rupees. After deducting the cost of 6,000 rupees per acre, the net profit comes to around 18,000 rupees. The demand for flax continues to rise day by day.
