Malkangiri, 28th Oct 2025: : A low-pressure system has developed and is turning into a cyclone, which is expected to impact Malkangiri district. A yellow warning has been issued for the district, and the district administration has begun preparations to tackle the situation.
In an editorial meeting, District Collector Somesh Upadhyay stated that the cyclone is likely to touch the coastal areas of Machilipatnam in Andhra Pradesh, and its effects will be felt in Malkangiri. Therefore, the district administration will remain fully alert from the 27th to the 30th of October. While a yellow warning remains in place on the 27th, a red warning has been issued for the 28th, 29th, and 30th. To manage the situation, all government employees’ leaves have been cancelled.
All BDOs (Block Development Officers) and Tahsildars have been instructed to remain vigilant. Preparations have been completed to evacuate people from low-lying areas and house them in temporary shelters. Sixteen schools have been converted into temporary relief centers.
All arrangements for emergency services have been made. Medical facilities will have generators running for seven days, and the district supply officer has been tasked with ensuring there is no shortage of food. To protect low-lying areas, the police and district administration have set up barricades and instructed people to stay safe. For those stranded, arrangements for dry food have been made.
The new challenge for the district is landslides, especially in Bandaghat and various areas of Chitrakonda. People are being made aware of the risks, and they have been asked to contact the district administration helpline immediately if needed.
The District Collector has stated that the Malkangiri administration is fully prepared to tackle the cyclone.
