Cuttack Moves Ahead in Bid for Creative City Recognition

Cuttack, Feb 23: As a historic city, Cuttack holds a distinct place across India. However, the district administration has so far lagged in promoting the city’s heritage at national and international levels. Though Cuttack’s famous silver filigree craft (Tarakasi) has received GI (Geographical Indication) recognition, progress in other related areas has been limited. These include efforts to secure international recognition for the historic Bali Jatra festival and Durga Puja, as well as GI status for Cuttack’s famous Dahibara Aloodum.

After nearly two years, the second meeting of the UNESCO committee formed by the district administration was held today at the District Collector’s office, where detailed discussions took place on these matters.
Key Issues Discussed

Three major subjects were discussed in the meeting:

1. UNESCO recognition for Bali Jatra:
Committee members shared their views on what steps can be taken to obtain recognition from UNESCO for the historic Bali Jatra festival. Due to delays in documentation and the nomination process, this year’s multi-nomination application window has already been missed for Bali Jatra. Another festival may be projected instead this cycle, and Bali Jatra may be proposed in a future round. The Collector stressed that preparations and documentation must begin immediately for the next opportunity.

2. Applying for UNESCO Creative City status:
There is an opportunity for Cuttack to apply for UNESCO Creative City recognition. Around 350 cities worldwide and eight Indian cities have already received this tag — including
Mumbai (film),
Jaipur and Srinagar (crafts),
Hyderabad (gastronomy),
Gwalior and Chennai (music),
Kozhikode (literature), and
Lucknow (gastronomy).
Cuttack can apply either under the gastronomy category for Dahibara Aloodum or under the crafts category for Tarakasi silver filigree. Committee members will prepare the required documents with administrative support.

3. GI recognition for Dahibara Aloodum:

Discussions were also held on how to secure GI recognition for Cuttack Dahibara Aloodum. The administration itself cannot apply for GI status. Only institutions, organizations, or trader associations connected with the product can apply. The district administration will assist them in collecting and preparing documentation. The MSME department will also play a supporting role.
The District Collector emphasized continuing efforts in all these directions. The meeting was attended by the Sub-Collector, district culture officials, museum representatives, and noted scholars and experts.
