Critical Shortage: 107 Doctor Posts Vacant at Jeypore DH Hospital

Koraput, 20th Sept 2025:  At the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Jeypore, 107 doctor posts remain vacant. Shockingly, in seven departments, not a single specialist is available. Due to the absence of an anesthesiologist, even basic surgeries are not being conducted.

Many critical patients are being referred elsewhere after receiving only primary treatment. Currently, only 30% of the sanctioned doctors are working at the DHH, yet the hospital continues to function, albeit with limited patient care. This has become a matter of concern for local representatives and citizens alike.

The Koraput district, which has a large tribal population, was expected to receive improved healthcare services following the establishment of the Sahid Laxman Nayak Medical College. However, despite that, the District Headquarters Hospital in Jeypore has failed to deliver adequate care due to severe staff shortages.

While the Medical College is functioning, a larger number of patients are still relying on the DHH for treatment. However, due to the lack of specialists in seven departments, and without anesthesiologists, surgeries cannot be performed — resulting in almost all cases being referred to other institutions.

Although the government has approved 156 doctor posts, only 49 doctors are currently working. This massive shortage — 107 doctors missing — clearly raises concerns about how proper healthcare services are being managed in such conditions.
