Nabarangpur, Dec, 10: The Child Marriage–Free India Campaign was officially launched at the Sarojini Kalyan Mandap by the district administration in collaboration with the Association for Literacy and Awareness. This 100-day special awareness campaign, from 23 November to 8 March, carries great importance for Nabarangpur district, as child marriage continues to take place here at a significantly high rate.
The inaugural program was presided over by Maheshwar Majhi, while Odisha State Child Rights Commission member Sujata Nayak attended as the chief guest. Among the distinguished guests were District Collector Dr. ——, members of the District Planning Committee, Municipality Chairperson, Rajiv Sahu from the Tribal Development Department, DSWO, and other officials.
In his keynote address, the District Collector emphasized the need for strong efforts and coordinated action to make Nabarangpur a child marriage–free district. He highlighted the crucial role of Anganwadi workers, ASHAs, Child Protection staff, and other frontline workers in preventing child marriage. He stressed that if any girl remains absent from school for more than a week, it should be immediately reported to Anganwadi workers or school authorities, as this could be an early warning sign of a possible child marriage.
The Collector reiterated that child marriage is illegal and not just the responsibility of government officials but of every citizen. He urged everyone to continuously work toward eliminating this practice so that girls can enjoy their fundamental rights.
As part of the campaign, various activities will be conducted, including:
* Awareness rallies
* Poster campaigns
* Essay and speech competitions
* Sensitization programs at temples, mosques, churches, and other places of worship
* Display of anti–child marriage banners
* Cultural programs
* Awareness drives involving band parties, photographers, and tent house owners
* Signing of written pledges from community members
During the event, the District Collector administered an oath to all attendees to stand firmly against child marriage.
Among those present were District Child Protection Officer Suresh Patnaik, District Information & Public Relations Officer Manoj Behera, District Welfare Officer Rabindra Palaka, along with several officials including Kishori Pattnaik, Amali Pradhan, Karuna, Amit Patnaik, Vikram Rana from Piramal Foundation, Child Rights Support Officer Souraj Rohina, Municipality representatives, Anganwadi workers, and others.
Students presented a variety of cultural performances, and the program was conducted by Chandana.
