Lamtaput, 18th Oct 2025: A car caught fire outside a private hospital in Lamtaput, Koraput district, while three people sleeping inside narrowly escaped with their lives.
According to reports, Savitri Mach, a resident of Baheripada, Nandapur, had been brought to the hospital for treatment by her relatives — Surendra Khemundu, driver Dipu Bahadur, and Hemanta Khara. Since the patient’s condition worsened late at night, the three accompanying persons decided to rest inside the car parked outside the hospital.
Due to the cold early in the morning, they turned on the car heater and fell asleep inside. However, the continuous use of the heater caused a short circuit, which eventually ignited a fire inside the vehicle.
Sensing the extreme heat, the three managed to escape just in time before the car was completely engulfed in flames. The incident caused panic among the relatives of other patients present near the hospital.
Later, medical staff and local people attempted to douse the flames. Though the fire brigade from Lamtaput was informed, they arrived late but eventually brought the fire under control.
The owner of the car has lodged a report at the Lamtaput police outpost regarding the incident.
