Nabarangpur: Although government assistance is available for the treatment of poor patients, such schemes are often ineffective at the grassroots level. In the tribal-dominated Nabarangpur district, many poor families struggle to access government support for medical treatment. A heart-wrenching case has emerged from Papadahandi Block, where a poor patient has been suffering in agony for the past five years due to a lack of proper medical care.
According to reports, Mati Majhi (60), the wife of Damu Majhi from Chedemaruguda village under Chandrapur Panchayat in Papadahandi Block, was diagnosed with cancer five years ago. Initially, she was treated at SCB Medical College, Cuttack, bearing the expenses from her own limited resources. However, due to financial constraints, her treatment had to be discontinued, and she was brought back home without completing the medical procedures.
Belonging to a daily wage laborer’s family, they could not afford the costly treatment. As a result, she continues to suffer in unbearable pain. The situation has worsened with the growth of a tumor in her mouth, making it extremely difficult for her to eat.
The family members have expressed that government assistance could make her treatment possible. Both the family and the villagers have appealed to the authorities to provide the necessary support for her medical care.
