Sambalpur, 5th Nov 2025: The call drop problem of BSNL in Sambalpur has become so severe that it’s nearly impossible to talk on the phone for more than a few minutes without the call getting disconnected. Even within the city limits, users often find their phones showing “out of network coverage” or “unreachable.” Frequently, calls abruptly end, followed by an automated voice saying, “The number you have dialed is not assigned to anyone” or “This number is not available.”
Investigations into the issue reveal that, according to an independent quality audit conducted by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on mobile network services across Odisha, BSNL’s network is the weakest among all telecom providers.
The situation is particularly alarming in western Odisha, where BSNL’s overall network quality is the poorest, with call drop rates exceeding 12%—far higher than the 2% call drop limit allowed by TRAI. That means BSNL’s performance is six times worse than the acceptable standard.
Despite Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent launch of BSNL’s 4G network, users in this region continue to face extremely poor internet speeds. For instance, in network selection mode, Jio operates at 339 Mbps, Airtel at 114 Mbps, while BSNL manages only 8.90 Mbps — and that too in areas with signal coverage. Just 2 kilometers away from a BSNL tower, the network completely disappears.
According to TRAI’s neutral drive test conducted in February 2025, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) ranked as the poorest performer in overall mobile network quality across Odisha.
