Kotpad 27th January 2025 The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has urged the Water Resources Department to take immediate measures to prevent pollution in the Daya River. The Daya River, a critical water body in Odisha, has been suffering from increasing pollution levels due to untreated sewage, industrial waste, and encroachments. BMC emphasized the need for a collaborative approach to restore the river’s ecological balance and ensure its cleanliness.
The corporation highlighted the role of untreated waste being discharged into the river, which poses a threat to both aquatic life and public health. They suggested setting up sewage treatment plants, stricter waste management regulations, and regular monitoring of water quality. Encroachment along the riverbanks has also been identified as a major issue, leading to reduced water flow and further degradation.
The BMC proposed joint efforts, including awareness campaigns for local communities to minimize waste dumping. It also called for better enforcement of environmental laws to tackle industrial effluents. The Daya River holds cultural and historical significance for the region, making its preservation a top priority.
The request underscores the urgent need for sustainable water resource management and inter-departmental cooperation to protect this vital natural resource.
