Koraput, 25th Oct 2025:  The climate and soil of Koraput district are highly suitable for turmeric cultivation. Presently, turmeric is being cultivated over 3,300 hectares of land in the district.

Black turmeric — known as a remedy for cancer, asthma, and respiratory diseases — is now being cultivated in the region. Twenty farmers from Dashmantpur have been provided 50 kg of black turmeric seeds. To ensure quality control, representatives from a pharmaceutical company have also visited the farmers’ fields.

Cultivation of black turmeric, rich in medicinal properties, began in the district this year, and its demand is steadily increasing.

According to reports, black turmeric is extremely beneficial for cancer patients. The curcumin compound present in it helps prevent the growth of cancer cells. It also possesses antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Since it boosts immunity, it acts as an effective remedy for digestive issues, asthma, and respiratory disorders. It is also useful in treating skin diseases and in pain relief.

For the first time this year, the Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT) has initiated experimental cultivation of a black turmeric variety in Koraput. About 50 kg of seeds of this variety were provided to the Integrated Tribal Development Agency (ITDA). The ITDA distributed these seeds among 20 women farmers in the Adimanda area of Dashmantpur block under the Bandhan Development Programme, along with technical guidance and training related to cultivation practices.

The crop has been cultivated through organic methods. The seeds were sown in June, and the crop has now grown well, with turmeric rhizomes forming on the plants.
