Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is planning to relocate Bhubaneswar’s first and only 63-year-old Sainik School, which has produced thousands of soldiers over the years. The Public Works Department (PWD) has directed the Khordha District Collector to identify alternative land for the school’s relocation.

Back in December, the previous government had approved the school’s continued presence, but now the current administration is pushing for its relocation despite opposition from various quarters, including more than ten retired generals and defense personnel.

Historical Significance of the School

The Sainik School was established on January 15, 1962, under the leadership of the then-Chief Minister Biju Patnaik. Initially, it operated in a vacant building meant for a school for the deaf and mute, but on January 8, 1964, with support from the then-Prime Minister and state government, it moved to a new permanent campus, where it flourished in terms of education and military training.

Relocation Plans & Land Identification

The Ministry of Defense and Sainik School authorities have been informed about the decision. The Khordha District Collector has been instructed to find suitable land outside the city, and 30 acres have been identified, though currently, the school occupies 142 acres.

The PWD has started taking steps for the relocation, stating that if the school does not vacate the current premises, alternative measures will be taken. Meanwhile, the school authorities have strongly opposed the decision, refusing to comply with the relocation order.
