Bangiriposhi, 12th Sept 2025: In Baripada town, the condition of roads has deteriorated so badly that they are now being referred to as “death traps” by locals. Due to continuous rainfall over the past six months, almost all roads in the town have become severely damaged, filled with potholes and dust, posing a serious risk to commuters.
Locals report that the flying dust and bumpy rides are not just causing discomfort, but also leading to frequent accidents. The situation is worse because even when repairs are undertaken, the quality is poor, resulting in roads getting damaged again within a short period.
Frustration among citizens is growing, especially with the upcoming Durga Puja festival, when heavy traffic and public movement are expected. If repairs are not carried out immediately, accidents will become inevitable, say concerned residents.
Despite repeated complaints to the concerned departments, no concrete action has been taken yet. Locals have warned that if the situation is not addressed urgently, they may be forced to gherao (protest against) the Public Works Department (PWD) in the coming days.
When approached for a response, PWD official Gaurav Das refused to comment on the matter, saying it was not under his purview. However, a Municipality representative stated that road repairs under the municipal limits will begin soon, and a letter has already been sent to the PWD requesting joint repair efforts.
The people of Baripada are now hoping that road repairs begin immediately, to avoid further accidents and ensure smooth traffic during the festive season.
