Malkangiri,7th Oct 2025:  Due to low-pressure-induced rainfall, the water levels in Balimela and Satiguda dams of Malkangiri district have increased.

At Balimela Dam in Chitrakonda, which has a water storage capacity of 1518 feet, the current water level has now reached 1501 feet. If this kind of rainfall continues, the dam could soon reach its full capacity. According to Assistant Engineer Gadadhar Pradhan from the dam project, if the water level approaches the danger mark, spillway gates will be opened.

He further stated that adequate water has already been stored in the Balimela reservoir. There will be no issues in supplying water to the Balimela powerhouse. Also, there will be sufficient water for the irrigation project at Potteru.

Similarly, in Satiguda Dam, located in the Malkangiri Sadar sub-division, the water level is also rising. Junior Engineer Chaitanya Sagar from the Medium Irrigation Department informed that while the dam’s storage capacity is 194 feet, the current water level has reached 192.63 meters, and today it has increased to 192.2 meters.

If the water level continues to rise, water will be released into the canal. As of now, the stored water in the reservoir is adequate for irrigation as well as for drinking water supply to the nearby town, and there should be no disruptions.

However, if the rain continues, there is concern that water levels in both reservoirs may surpass the danger mark. According to the district emergency department, seven blocks of the district have recorded an average rainfall of 108 mm in the last 48 hours.
