Malkangiri, 9th Aug 2025: An “Awareness Day” programme was organized today at the Markelguda Residential Tribal Girls’ Ashram, operated by the Tagore Society, Malkangiri.
As part of the event, several activities were conducted including:
- Planting fruit and flower-bearing saplings,
- Environmental awareness card games,
- The traditional “Snakes and Ladders” game, and
- A drawing competition focused on environmental themes.
Over 15 types of medicinal, fruit, and flowering plants were planted on the school campus. These saplings, such as Pejuli (Rudraksha), Ata (Custard Apple), Jamkoli (Black Plum), Gangasiuli (Night Jasmine), and Amla (Indian Gooseberry), were provided by the local forest department nursery.
Through card-based games featuring images of animals, birds, and reptiles typically found in our forests and surroundings, students discussed the importance of these creatures to our ecosystem. The Snakes and Ladders game was adapted to help students learn which human actions harm the environment and how we can protect it from pollution.
In the creative drawing competition, students illustrated various ways to protect nature and inspired others through their artwork.
The programme was conducted in the presence of:
- Diparani Nayak (Environmentalist),
- Sasmita Samal (Head Teacher),
- Minati Behera,
- Debe Madkami,
- Susmita Sodi,
- Binati Padiami, and
- Rita Durua (Assistant Teachers).
