Brahmapur , 17th Nov 2025: Athagarh Patna in the Kabisurjyanagar block is set to be declared a heritage village. This village is the birthplace of the poet Kabisurjya Baladev Rath. The state government has been identifying heritage villages and granting them official recognition.
It has also been proposed that the birthplace of Kabisurjya Rath receive similar recognition. This was announced on Saturday at a press conference organized by the Kabisurjya Sahitya Sansad (Literary Council) at the Ganjam Kalaparishad in Brahmapur.
According to Suresh Chandra Pattnayak, editor of the council, Kabisurjya Rath was a Tripuri by origin. He was born in Athagarh Patna near the Kanak Durga temple. His ancestral home still exists there. He had worked close to the king of Athagarh and also, for some time, with the king of Badakhemundi.
After his death in Brahmapur, his last rites were also performed in Athagarh. Many legends and literary works mention Athagarh, highlighting its importance in Kabisurjya’s life and writings.
On this occasion, a meeting was held at the 3rd Ganjam Kalaparishad under the presidency of Jagabandhu Bhol, president of the Kabisurjya Sahitya Sansad. Many district poets and literary figures participated.

The meeting emphasized the recognition of Athagarh Patna as a heritage village due to its literary, cultural, and historical significance, particularly as the birthplace of Kabisurjya Baladev Rath.
