Assam Launches Fresh Drive to Curb Illegal Immigration

Dispur,23rd Aug 2025: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma has initiated a new measure to prevent illegal immigration from Bangladesh. According to the new directive, people above 18 years of age will no longer be issued Aadhaar cards. The Assam Cabinet approved this decision on Thursday.

The move aims to prevent individuals entering the state illegally from obtaining Indian citizenship. Under the new rules:

Adults above 18 years will have one month to apply for an Aadhaar card.

For Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Tea Tribes, people above 18 will have one year to submit their Aadhaar applications.

This initiative will help verify the genuine identity of citizens and also identify illegal immigrants. In special circumstances, the Deputy Commissioner will have the authority to issue new Aadhaar cards. Officials clarified that this step ensures illegal immigrants will not be able to obtain Aadhaar cards in Assam.
