New Delhi: It has been decided that the performance of government lawyers will be evaluated every year. If the performance of a lawyer is found to be poor, they will not only be removed from cases but also excluded from the panel, according to the new rules issued by the Ministry of Law and Justice. The rules will be applied not only to the central government lawyers but also to all state government lawyers.

According to a senior official from the Ministry, due to the poor performance of some lawyers, the government has been losing several cases in courts and tribunals. As a result, the government will evaluate the performance of its lawyers in courts and tribunals. Based on the evaluation, cases will be allocated to lawyers, and decisions will be made regarding the promotion of government lawyers to higher positions, extending their tenure, or removing them from the panel.

On the other hand, the government’s expenditure on legal cases has been increasing annually. According to the Ministry of Law and Justice, over the past 10 years, the central government has spent ₹400 crore on legal cases. In 2014-15, ₹26.64 crore was spent, and in 2023-24, this amount has increased significantly.
