All India Trinamool Congress Announces 291 Candidates for Upcoming West Bengal Assembly Elections

Kolkata, March 25: Political activity has intensified in West Bengal ahead of the Assembly elections. The ruling Trinamool Congress on Tuesday declared candidates for 291 out of the total 294 seats.
TMC supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, addressing a press conference, said that her party would contest 291 seats, while the remaining three seats would be left for alliance partner BGPM. She expressed confidence that the TMC would secure an easy victory and win more than 226 seats.
Describing the election as a battle for the state’s identity, Mamata said that West Bengal would emerge victorious and the “Delhi forces” would be defeated.
According to the candidate list released by TMC, there are 52 women candidates, 47 minority candidates, 95 SC/ST candidates, and two celebrity candidates. Mamata Banerjee herself will contest from the Bhabanipur constituency. She is expected to face BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari there.
In the 2021 Assembly elections, Suvendu had defeated Mamata in the Nandigram constituency. Later, Mamata won the by-election from Bhabanipur, considered a stronghold of the TMC.
Other prominent candidates include Firhad Hakim from Kolkata Port, Subrata Mukherjee from Behala East, Ratna Chatterjee from Behala West, Debasish Kumar from Rashbehari, and Gautam Deb from Siliguri.
Meanwhile, the Election Commission of India has ordered the transfer of 19 senior police officers in the state. ADG and IGP officers of South and North Bengal regions, as well as the Police Commissioners of Howrah, Barrackpore, Chandannagar, and Asansol-Durgapur, have been removed. Additionally, 12 Superintendents of Police and one Deputy Commissioner across 13 districts have been transferred.
