Chennai: Just last week, the BJP and AIADMK had announced an alliance for the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. However, AIADMK has now backed out from the plan. AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) stated that Tamil Nadu will not accept a “mentorship government,” and the alliance with BJP was only election-oriented. So far, the BJP has not responded to EPS’s statement.

EPS’s remarks also directly contradict Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent statement. Last week, after announcing the AIADMK-BJP alliance, Shah had said that both parties would jointly contest the upcoming assembly elections and that there had been no disagreement from the Tamil party.

EPS had initially said that the alliance was formed with a shared vision for Tamil Nadu’s development and progress. However, AIADMK has now stepped back from the alliance, declaring it was only for electoral purposes.

Reports suggest that internal dissatisfaction among some AIADMK leaders about the BJP alliance and fears of losing minority votes have led to the party’s change in stance. AIADMK blames the BJP for the alliance’s poor performance in the 2021 Assembly election and the 2019 and 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
