Umarkot, Jan, 02: National Farmers’ Day is celebrated across the country. Life would be incomplete without farmers. They work tirelessly for everyone, often without thinking of themselves or their families, and produce golden crops through their hard work.
The day also commemorates the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, India’s fifth Prime Minister and a renowned farmer leader. Every year on 23rd December, the country observes National Farmers’ Day in his honor.
During his tenure, Prime Minister Charan Singh focused on improving farmers’ incomes, introducing modern agricultural machinery, and implementing advanced farming methods. His reforms brought significant changes to agriculture, and in recognition of this, since 2001, National Farmers’ Day has been observed.
Dr. Shashank Lenka, senior scientist at the Agricultural Science Centre, emphasized that Charan Singh himself was born into a farmer family, which made him deeply aware of farmers’ issues. He stated that the progress of the nation is possible only through the development of agriculture and farmers. Farmers provide food to society by cultivating the land with their own sweat and effort. Therefore, it is important to honor and respect them.
Another purpose of celebrating this day is to make people aware of farmers’ contributions. The government also conducts various development programs for the welfare of farmers and agriculture. On this occasion, farmers are encouraged to pledge themselves to holistic progress in agriculture and to take responsibility for the life of the food provider even during difficult times.
During the event, successful and leading farmers were honored for their achievements. The program was attended by key figures from the Agricultural Science Centre, including Paritosh Murmu, Rudra Binapani Taria, scientist Dr. P. Prasanna Mahalik, and agricultural machinery expert Mallik Yantrapati Ing Swagatika, among others.
