Kotpad: Even at an advanced age, Harinath, a differently-abled man, has not given up. Despite his physical disability, he has conquered all odds with relentless hard work. His tireless efforts day and night have turned him into an inspiration—not only for the youth but also for elderly people who often give up.
Harinath Randhari, a resident of Narahandi village under Kotpad block in Koraput district, is over 75 years old. Though physically challenged, his strong work ethic and relentless labor have made him a role model in society. He has no family—no wife, son, or daughter. According to Harinath, he was not born disabled. Around 30 years ago, an unknown illness left him permanently disabled.
As the saying goes, “When fate strikes, all paths seem closed.” His wife left him after his illness and remarried. Despite facing such painful and harsh circumstances, Harinath never gave up in the battle of life. A relative from his village allowed him a small piece of land just enough to build a hut. After the illness, he couldn’t even walk properly without help. Yet, he chose the path of struggle and hard work, refusing to break down.
Betting on life itself for survival, he fights every day for his livelihood. With the first rays of the sun, Harinath sets out daily on his tricycle. He travels 20 to 30 kilometers each day, going from village to village, collecting tin containers. He says he buys each container for Rs. 15–20 and sells them for Rs. 25–30. The money he earns goes towards his medicine and daily living expenses.
From the government, he receives food rations and an old-age pension, but he says it’s not enough for a decent living.
In his old age, combined with disability, he appeals to the government to provide him with some financial support or incentives. With such assistance, he believes he could start a small business and sustain himself independently.
