7 Years On, Biju Bridge Still Incomplete; Locals Demand Action

Gunupur: Despite multiple development schemes and heavy government spending aimed at improving rural infrastructure and connectivity, many projects fail to meet deadlines, causing hardships for local residents. A case in point is found in the Gunupur region of Rayagada district, where villagers are facing significant issues due to an unfinished bridge under the Biju Setu Yojana.

The Mahendra Tanaya River flows between Sampini and Meringi in Ghanantri Panchayat under Gunupur Block. Responding to public demand, the Rural Development Department initiated construction of a bridge over the river. The project, costing Rs 11.40 crore, began on December 9, 2018, and was scheduled for completion by December 10, 2020.

However, even after four and a half years past the deadline, the construction is far from complete. Around 50% of the work remains unfinished. The contractor has abandoned the project midway, leaving behind construction materials and machinery scattered across the site. Half-built bridge pillars stand idle in the middle of the river.

In the rainy season, rising river water severely disrupts transportation, causing immense difficulties for locals. Due to the incomplete bridge, residents of Sampini village have to travel nearly 20 kilometers to Ghanantri Panchayat to collect essentials like ration rice.

Villagers are demanding the immediate completion of the bridge and have warned of protests if action is not taken soon. The construction firm’s failure to complete the project has been reported to higher authorities. Officials have now written to the department seeking reallocation of funds and permission for a re-tender to resume and complete the remaining work.

According to Chittaranjan Panda, Assistant Executive Engineer of the Rural Development Department, the work will be restarted soon after necessary approvals are obtained.
