Nabarangpur, 30th Oct 2025: It will be 26 years tomorrow since the super cyclone struck Odisha. That day was October 29, 1999. Exactly 26 years ago, Odisha experienced one of the most devastating cyclones in its history, leaving marks that the people of Odisha still remember. The days have passed, but the scars remain.
During the cyclone, there was relentless rain and roaring winds, and suddenly dark, ominous clouds appeared in the sky. Everything changed in an instant. Clouds gathered, winds began to blow, and the fierce cyclone that arose from the middle of the sea destroyed everything in its path. Large trees were uprooted, lives were lost, homes were destroyed. Tens of thousands of people lost their lives, with nearly 10,000 fatalities. Tomorrow will mark 26 years since that tragic day.
Currently, Odisha is again under the watch of the cyclone monitoring system due to a new cyclone. Although Cyclone “Montha” is not expected to make landfall in Odisha, its effects are likely to be felt. It is predicted that the cyclone may intensify during the night, possibly affecting Odisha.
Rainfall continues in Odisha today, and it is expected to continue tomorrow. On October 29, the cyclone’s influence will be felt in Odisha. The districts of Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Kalahandi, and Nabarangpur are considered high-risk areas, with a high possibility of heavy rainfall. The districts of Nuapada, Balangir, Kandhamal, and Gajapati have been placed under orange alert by the Indian Meteorological Department.
Similarly, due to strong winds, red alerts have been issued for Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Gajapati, and Kalahandi. On October 29, strong winds are expected in Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, and Gajapati, according to the Indian Meteorological Department.
