Koraput, 11th Oct 2025:  In accordance with the Odisha Government’s School and Mass Education Department notification and approval from the district-level transfer committee, 228 junior teachers of Level 4 and Level 5 cadre have been transferred within different blocks of Koraput district as per the government’s education policy.

On October 6, a transfer list signed by the District Education Officer (DEO) of Koraput, containing names of 228 teachers, was released. This sudden release of the list sparked strong reactions among the teaching community. Interestingly, a day after the transfer list was made public, the DEO himself was transferred, adding to the controversy.

Out of the 228 transfers, 82 teachers were transferred from one block to another, while the rest were shifted within the same block. Dissatisfaction has reportedly grown because some teachers were included in the list without recommendations from local MLAs, which is usually customary.

Allegations have surfaced that two staff members at the DEO’s office were behind preparing the transfer list. These employees were transferred earlier but have since been reposted to the DEO office, raising concerns of conflict of interest. Some teacher leaders claim that these individuals influenced the list preparation.

Concerns have also been raised over:

  • Teachers transferred without meeting minimum eligibility conditions.
  • Some teachers being relocated less than three years after their last posting — against standard policy.
  • Certain schools being targeted without transparent reasoning or investigation.
  • It is also reported that despite Koraput Collector’s instructions to transfer teachers who have served over 10 years at a single school, those orders were not implemented. This perceived irregularity led to the overnight transfer and immediate relieving of the DEO.

Local Congress president Rupak Turuk has strongly opposed the “irregular” transfer process, demanding that the entire list be canceled immediately.

Distressed Female Teachers Left Out

Many female teachers who have been serving in remote, inaccessible areas for over two decades were not considered for transfer — even after repeated requests and formal applications. Some even approached the former District Collector in person, requesting transfers to schools nearer to roads or accessible areas, but to no avail.

Transfer Breakdown by Block:

  • Out of 228 transferred teachers:
  • 99 from Koraput block
  • 6 from Pottangi
  • 91 from Bandhugaon
  • 4 from Boipariguda
  • 9 from Narayanpatna
  • 9 from Dashmantpur
  • 3 from Nandapur

In total, 941 teachers across various blocks of Koraput district have been transferred to different schools.

This large-scale reshuffle, marked by irregularities and political undercurrents, has stirred widespread dissatisfaction among educators and raised serious questions about transparency and fairness in the teacher transfer process in Koraput.
