Nabarangpur: May 20: A unique wedding was witnessed in Nabarangpur during the auspicious bathing festival celebrations. A young man married a transgender woman, and after the marriage, the newlywed couple decided to start their family life together.
The wedding was held with great celebration last Monday at a transgender community house (Akhada) in Umerkote. Their love story, which began through social media, eventually reached the wedding stage, and the couple now plans to build a life together.
The groom, Satyajit Acharya, belongs to the Tirtol area of Jagatsinghpur district. About two years ago, he became friends on social media with Shivani Sahu, a transgender woman from Kalahandi district. Over time, their friendship turned into love. After two years of relationship, they decided to get married.
Meanwhile, Shivani had moved from Kalahandi to the Akhada of Debalina Acharya in Umerkote, Nabarangpur district. A few days ago, Shivani expressed her desire to marry Satyajit. Akhada Guruma Debalina spoke with Satyajit, and he also expressed his wish to marry Shivani.
When Satyajit’s family was informed about their decision, they initially opposed the relationship. However, later they accepted their son’s love and agreed to the marriage. On the other hand, Shivani’s family did not support the marriage because Shivani is a transgender woman.
Since both were adults, the Akhada community decided to conduct the marriage according to Gandharva traditions last Monday. The wedding included dance, music, and a feast. Local people attended the ceremony and blessed the newlywed couple.
Currently, the couple is staying in Umerkote. After a few days, they plan to move to Satyajit’s workplace and begin their new family life there.
As this is reportedly the first marriage of its kind in Nabarangpur district, it has become a major topic of discussion in the area.
