Telugu Literary Stalwart Sharada Ashokavardhan Passes Away

 

Hyderabad, May 14...Renowned Telugu litterateur Smt. Sharada Ashokavardhan passed away at the age of 87 at her daughter’s residence in Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, on Wednesday night.

A towering figure in Telugu literature, Smt. Sharada Ashokavardhan made an indelible mark through her prolific contributions spanning more than 80 books across diverse literary genres, including novels, poetry, plays, essays, lyrics, children’s literature, and newspaper columns.

She was also a familiar and respected voice on All India Radio, where she worked for several years. Several of her lyrical compositions attained immense popularity, especially “Manasaayera Madhava.” Her Ganapathi Suprabatham, rendered by Dr. Mangalampalli Balamuralikrishna, continues to enjoy popularity among music lovers and devotees alike.

Many of her lyrics were also beautifully tuned by noted music composer Palagummi Viswanadham. Her works have been translated into Tamil, Kannada, and Hindi, and people have earned doctorates by researching her work.

Apart from her literary accomplishments, Smt. Sharada Ashokavardhan served with distinction in public service as Joint Director in the State Information Department and later as Director of Jawahar Bal Bhavan.

She was the recipient of three state Nandi Awards and numerous other prestigious honours during her illustrious career, including the Telugu University Award, Susheela Narayana Reddy Award and Rajyalakshmi Award, among several others.

She also earned recognition as a commentator for several prestigious programmes organised by the late Chief Minister and legendary actor N.T. Rama Rao. Smt. Sharada Ashokavardhan is survived by four daughters, one of whom is a well-known journalist, anchor, and author.

Her passing marks the end of a glorious literary era, leaving behind a rich legacy that will continue to inspire generations of readers, writers, and lovers of Telugu literature
