July 6 (UDN): Authorities in Odisha have issued a warning about a possible minor flood situation as continuous rainfall in upper catchment areas has caused river water levels to rise, even though rainfall has reduced in some parts of the state.
Officials have particularly cautioned about the Baitarani River, where increased inflow from upstream regions may lead to a small-scale flood situation. Low-lying areas in Jajpur district and Bhadrak district are likely to be affected.
The Water Resources Department is closely monitoring river levels across the state, along with rainfall patterns in the catchment areas. The situation at the Hirakud Dam is also under constant review, and a decision on opening its gates is expected within the next two days based on water inflow.
Officials also said that a fresh low-pressure system may form over the Bay of Bengal, which could bring more rainfall and further impact river conditions. Residents in vulnerable and riverbank areas have been advised to stay alert and follow safety instructions.
