Odisha Government Issues High Alert for Heavy Rainfall
Overview of the Weather Warning
On September 25, the Odisha government announced a high alert in 18 districts due to a warning from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) about heavy to very heavy rainfall. This warning comes as a depression is projected to cross the southern coast of Odisha on September 27.
Expected Weather Conditions
The IMD has forecasted that a low-pressure area will form over the Bay of Bengal and is expected to intensify into a depression by the evening of September 26. It is likely to move over south Odisha and north Andhra Pradesh, particularly affecting areas like Koraput and Malkangiri. These districts may experience very heavy rainfall, prompting officials to take precautionary measures.
Government Preparedness and Response
The Odisha government has implemented several proactive steps in response to the impending weather. Collectors from key districts like Koraput, Malkangiri, and Nabarangpur have already canceled leaves for government employees, ensuring availability for emergency responses. Rescue units, including the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF), have been deployed to vulnerable areas.
In addition, the government is launching public awareness campaigns to keep residents informed and cautious. The Engineer-in-Chief of the Water Resources Department has stated that reservoirs are currently half-filled and capable of managing the expected rainwater. The Hirakud dam has also opened sluice gates to manage water levels effectively.
As the situation develops, the official message remains to stay calm and vigilant. The government urges the public to adhere to safety guidelines during this weather alert. It is crucial for residents to stay informed through official updates as Odisha prepares for the possible impacts of heavy rainfall.
