Odisha Accelerates Clean Energy Push: 33 Renewable Projects Approved Worth INR 9,544 Cr

Bhubaneswar, Sept 14, 2025: Odisha is fast emerging as a front-runner in India’s clean energy transformation. In a major step towards sustainable growth, the state’s Single Window Clearance Committee has approved 33 renewable energy projects since June 2024, with a combined generation capacity of 1,350.30 megawatts (MW). These projects are set to bring in a total investment of approximately ₹9,544.03 crore, marking a significant leap in the state’s clean energy ambitions.

A Bold Leap Towards a Greener Future

The cleared projects span across solar, wind, hybrid, and biomass-based energy sources, indicating Odisha’s commitment to diversify its energy mix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The initiative is in line with the state’s renewable energy policy and India’s broader national goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

These projects are expected to be developed across various districts, with a focus on optimal land use, minimal ecological disruption, and maximum socio-economic benefits to local communities.

Why This Matters: The Importance of These Projects

1. Climate Resilience & Environmental Benefits

With rising concerns over climate change, the push for renewables helps Odisha cut down on carbon emissions and air pollution. The projects will significantly contribute to reducing the state’s carbon footprint, supporting India’s commitments under the Paris Agreement.

2. Energy Security

Odisha’s power demand is growing rapidly due to industrialization and urban expansion. Renewable projects will help meet this rising demand sustainably, while reducing the pressure on traditional thermal power plants.

3. Investment & Job Creation

The ₹9,544 crore investment will unlock thousands of job opportunities—directly during the construction and operation phases, and indirectly through supply chains, logistics, and local services. It also opens doors for technology transfer, skill development, and local entrepreneurship in green tech.

4. Rural Development

Many renewable energy projects, especially solar and wind, are being set up in rural and semi-rural regions. This not only improves energy access in remote areas but also boosts rural infrastructure, land value, and income opportunities for farmers through land leasing or participation in community-based projects.

5. Industrial Competitiveness

As the world shifts toward cleaner supply chains, Odisha’s green energy infrastructure can attract environment-conscious industries, particularly in sectors like steel, aluminum, and data centers, that are under pressure to reduce their carbon intensity.

 A Model for Other States

Odisha’s proactive approach—through streamlined clearances, investor-friendly policies, and dedicated focus on renewable energy infrastructure—sets a strong example for other states. By aligning clean energy goals with economic development, Odisha is paving the way for a low-carbon, high-growth future.

 What’s Next?

The next steps include fast-tracking land allotment, grid connectivity, and infrastructure development to ensure timely execution of the approved projects. The state government is also exploring floating solar, waste-to-energy, and green hydrogen as future avenues to expand its clean energy portfolio.

With 33 renewable projects approved and over ₹9,500 crore in investment lined up, Odisha is not just talking about clean energy—it’s delivering it. This bold and strategic push will benefit the environment, economy, and people of the state for generations to come.
