Bhubaneswar, Sept 19, 2025 : In a major development that could significantly boost Odisha’s mineral wealth, an estimated 2,000 kilograms of gold ore has been identified beneath the soil in Debagarh and Keonjhar districts. This promising discovery was shared by Odisha Steel and Mines Minister Bibhuti Bhushan Jena during the ongoing session of the Legislative Assembly.
Responding to a question raised by MLA Ashwini Kumar Patra, the minister stated that preliminary surveys have found 1,685 kg of gold ore in Adas, Debagarh, and 311.07 kg in Gopur, Keonjhar. The findings are based on recent assessments carried out by national and state-level geological agencies.
Scientific Surveys Underway
The discovery follows extensive exploration work conducted by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) in collaboration with the State Directorate of Mines and Geology. At Adas in Debagarh, the GSI is leading the exploration activities, while in Gopur, Keonjhar, a joint investigation is being carried out by the State Government’s Geology Department, along with other allied institutions.
These surveys are aimed at verifying the commercial viability of the deposits and analyzing their geological characteristics, including the depth, purity, and extractability of the ore.
Next Steps: Evaluation and Extraction
Minister Jena confirmed that once the deposits are confirmed to be economically viable, the state government will take necessary steps to initiate the auction of mining rights through a transparent process. The focus will be on sustainable extraction that balances economic gain with environmental responsibility.
“If proven viable, steps will be taken to lease out the blocks for commercial mining operations. All necessary approvals and clearances will be sought to begin extraction in a regulated manner,” said Minister Jena.
