Puri, October 7, 2025: As the auspicious Odia month of Kartika begins, the holy city of Puri is once again witnessing the spiritual vibrancy that marks this sacred period. Devotees, especially elderly widows known as Habisialis, have started arriving in large numbers to observe the month-long Kartika Brata.

From October 7 to November 5, Puri — home to Lord Jagannath — will become a spiritual hub, attracting thousands of pilgrims from across Odisha and beyond.

Significance of the Month of Kartika in Odia Culture

The month of Kartika , the eighth month in the traditional Odia lunar calendar, is considered one of the most sacred months for worship, fasting, and spiritual discipline. It is believed that observing Kartika Brata during this time grants immense punya (spiritual merit) and paves the way for moksha (liberation).

During this month, devotees follow a strict vegetarian diet, perform daily rituals, visit temples, and read sacred texts like Kartika Mahatmya and Habisha Mahatmya.

Who are the Habisialis?

The term “Habisiali” refers primarily to widowed women who undertake Kartika Brata with utmost devotion and discipline. Traditionally, they give up worldly pleasures and dedicate the entire month to prayer, fasting, and service to Lord Jagannath.

They eat only one meal a day made without turmeric, onions, or garlic — a diet called “Habisa”. Many also sleep on the floor, wear simple white clothes, and avoid all forms of luxury.

Arrangements for Habisialis in Puri

In a show of spiritual hospitality and support, the Odisha government and Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) have made special arrangements for registered Habisialis. These include:

  • Free accommodation at key locations like Habisiali Bhavan, Bagala Dharmashala, and other designated rest houses.
  • Provision of daily Mahaprasad and drinking water
  • Sanitation and health check-up facilities
  • Volunteer support for elderly pilgrims

The arrangements are intended to ensure a safe and sacred experience for thousands of women participating in this deeply revered ritual.

Why is Puri the Center of Faith During Kartika?

Puri, known as Jagannath Dham, is one of the Char Dham pilgrimage sites and holds a central place in the hearts of Hindus, especially in Odisha. During Kartika, Puri becomes a spiritual epicenter for several reasons:

  • Lord Jagannath’s Presence: Devotees believe that observing Kartika Brata in the divine presence of Lord Jagannath brings unmatched spiritual blessings.
  • Special Rituals: Rituals like Tulasi Vivah, Nagarjuna Besha (if it falls this year), and Rasa Purnima are celebrated in grandeur here.
  • Holy Dip in Sea (Mahodadhi Snana): A bath in the sea and darshan at the Jagannath Temple during Kartika is considered supremely auspicious.
  • Customs and Legends: Scriptures mention that even the gods observe Kartika rituals in Puri. Many believe that all pilgrimages are equal to a single darshan of Lord Jagannath during this time.

 The Culmination – Kartika Purnima

The month ends with Kartika Purnima, a day of great spiritual significance. Devotees take early morning holy dips in rivers or the sea, light boats made of banana stems (called Boita Bandana), and offer prayers for peace and prosperity.

 Conclusion

The month of Kartika is not just a period of religious observance but also a powerful expression of faith, discipline, and devotion. For the Habisialis, it is a deeply personal journey of sacrifice and spiritual connection. And for Puri, it is yet another chapter in its timeless role as the beating heart of Odia spirituality.

As the sacred chants echo through the streets of this coastal temple town, Puri once again becomes the divine host to thousands walking the path of dharma, bhakti, and moksha.
