Paradip, Odisha : In a significant boost to India’s coastal security, the Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Adyama, an advanced patrol vessel, was formally commissioned into service today at the Paradip Port Coast Guard berth. The ceremony marks a major milestone in strengthening maritime surveillance along India’s eastern coastline.
ICGS Adyama
The vessel, aptly named ‘Adyama’ — meaning indomitable — lives up to its name with its cutting-edge capabilities. Measuring approximately 52 meters in length, ICGS Adyama is equipped with two high-powered diesel engines, enabling it to cruise at speeds of up to 27 knots (about 50 km/h). Designed primarily for coastal patrol and surveillance missions, the ship is engineered to counter threats such as sea piracy, smuggling, and illegal infiltration.
Significantly, 60% of the ship’s design and technology is indigenously developed, reflecting India’s growing capabilities in defence manufacturing and its push towards self-reliance under the ‘Aatmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.
Commissioning Ceremony
The commissioning ceremony was held with full honours at the Paradip Port. Shri Satyajit Mohanty, Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, presided over the event as the Chief Guest, emphasizing the strategic importance of such vessels in safeguarding India’s maritime borders.
“ICGS Adyama will significantly enhance our operational readiness along the eastern coast. Its commissioning is a proud moment not only for the Indian Coast Guard but also for India’s defence manufacturing sector,” said Shri Mohanty.
Strengthening Coastal Defence
With its induction, ICGS Adyama becomes a vital addition to the Indian Coast Guard’s Eastern Region fleet. Its primary duties include:
- Regular patrolling of the eastern seaboard
- Surveillance against maritime crimes such as smuggling, trafficking, and piracy
- Assistance in rescue and relief operations during maritime emergencies
- Supporting environmental protection efforts, especially oil-spill responses and marine pollution control
Given Odisha’s strategic coastal location and increasing maritime activities, Adyama is expected to play a crucial role in securing trade routes and ensuring safety of coastal communities.
Indigenous Power, Global Standards
Built with a focus on speed, endurance, and versatility, the vessel reflects India’s advancements in naval architecture and shipbuilding. Its high maneuverability and robust construction make it suitable for multi-mission roles, including humanitarian assistance, law enforcement, and search & rescue.
Conclusion:
The induction of ICGS Adyama underscores India’s commitment to securing its maritime interests and bolstering coastal defence infrastructure. As maritime threats evolve and the Indian Ocean Region grows in geopolitical significance, such patrol vessels will be instrumental in projecting presence and ensuring peace.
With “Adyama” now active, the Indian Coast Guard sends a clear message: India’s shores are safe, and its guardians — indomitable.
