Four Months On, Demands Unmet: Primary Teachers Protest at Lower PMG

Bhubaneswar, April 10: Four months ago, the government had promised to fulfill the two-point demands of the Primary Teachers’ Association. However, as no action has been taken so far, the association staged a protest today at Lower PMG.
Convener Ramlal Patel along with members of the steering committee participated in the protest and drew the government’s attention, demanding immediate fulfillment of their demands. Their key demands include upgrading posts and fixing the basic salary at ₹35,400 as per Level-9, counting contractual service since 2001 as regular service, and granting notional increments.
Earlier, the association had staged a protest at Gandhi Marg from December 5 to 9 regarding these demands. Ekamra MLA Babu Singh and former Union Minister Bishweswar Tudu had assured that the demands would be fulfilled within seven days, following which the association had suspended its agitation. Later, the government formed a high-level expert committee, but the association alleged that no concrete steps have been taken so far.
Today, the convener of the association was invited for discussions by the School and Mass Education Secretary. However, as no conclusion was reached, the association has demanded intervention from the Chief Minister. They warned that if their demands are not met, the agitation will be intensified at district and block levels.
The association also cautioned that any disruption in the education system due to the protest would be the responsibility of the government.
Members of the steering committee, including Sushant Kumar Behera, Ajit Maharana, Srikant Barik, Santosh Sahu, Ajay Dhal, Praveen Das, Bankim Chandra Sagar, Naresh Panigrahi, Pramod Pradhan, Prashant Mohapatra, Raghunath Puri, Padmalochan Nayak, Prakash Narayan Jena, Debashish Nath, Somanath Garada, Shishir Khatua, Rebati Panda, Priyambada Acharya, Devaki Patra, and Karubaki Panda, were present in the protest.
