Bhubaneswar, May 19: In schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), studying three languages has been made compulsory for students of Classes 9 and 10. Out of these three, two must be Indian languages/mother tongues.
Under the third language category (native language), 19 regional languages, including Odia, have been included. However, students will not have to appear for an examination in the third language in the Class 10 board exams.
This rule will come into effect from July 1. CBSE has issued a notification to all affiliated schools regarding this decision.
According to CBSE, the move has been taken based on the National Education Policy 2020 (National Education Policy 2020) and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023 (National Curriculum Framework for School Education 2023).
