Bhubaneswar, July 21 (UDN): In a move towards creating sustainable and commuter-friendly urban spaces, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) have launched a pilot project to develop modern green traffic and commuter shelters along the city’s Janpath corridor.
The initiative, implemented under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), aims to improve public convenience while promoting climate-responsive infrastructure and enhancing the city’s environmental aesthetics.
As part of the project, modern traffic shelters are being developed at Rupali Square and Power House Square, two major traffic intersections in Bhubaneswar. Additionally, four parking-cum-commuter shelters are being constructed at selected locations along the 5.8-km Smart Janpath corridor to provide better facilities for pedestrians, commuters, and motorists.
BMC Commissioner and BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana said the shelters have been designed by combining functionality, sustainability, and visual appeal. The structures will feature Flame Vine creepers over fabric canopies, which will gradually provide natural green cover, helping reduce heat impact and creating a more comfortable waiting environment.
The traffic shelters will also include specially designed screening panels to minimise direct sunlight exposure throughout the day and provide protection from harsh weather conditions.
The parking-cum-commuter sheds are planned to offer relief from heat and rain while serving as convenient waiting spaces. The facilities are expected to be especially beneficial for senior citizens, pregnant women, and other vulnerable commuters.
Officials said the project is part of Bhubaneswar’s broader efforts to develop greener, pedestrian-friendly, and citizen-centric public infrastructure while supporting the city’s ongoing beautification and landscaping initiatives.
The pilot project is expected to serve as a model for integrating sustainability with urban mobility solutions in the capital city.
