Puri, Oct 8 (UDN): Repeated theft of electricity cables has disrupted drinking water supply in Saraswatipur panchayat under Pipili block of Odisha’s Puri district, forcing residents to depend on traditional water sources for their daily needs.

The village water supply system draws water from the Bhargavi River. However, frequent theft of electrical wires has affected the power connection required to operate the pumping system, leaving villagers without a regular supply.

Women Walk Long Distances for Water

With the disruption continuing, residents have been compelled to fetch water from considerable distances.

Women and other villagers have been seen carrying pots and buckets to collect water for drinking and cooking. Many families have also turned to a well located on the outskirts of the village and nearby canals to meet their household requirements.

A resident said the repeated cable theft has created serious difficulties for the villagers and urged authorities to ensure a permanent solution.

“We are being forced to fetch water from far away for basic needs. The authorities should take immediate steps to restore regular supply and prevent the thefts from recurring,” the villager said.

Power Supply Restored, CCTV Plan Underway

Meanwhile, Pipili Block Development Officer Saroj Kumar Rout said the electricity connection to the water supply system has been restored.

The BDO said measures would also be taken to prevent further incidents. CCTV cameras may be installed at vulnerable locations to monitor the area and deter cable theft, he added.

Residents have welcomed the restoration but are seeking effective security measures to ensure that the water supply is not disrupted again.
