Sept. 28 (UDN): Rising floodwaters have entered the premises of the revered Maa Bhattarika Temple in Badamba of Odisha’s Cuttack district following the release of water through gates of the Hirakud Dam, prompting the district administration to impose prohibitory restrictions around the shrine.
The rising water has reportedly reached close to the sanctum sanctorum, raising concerns over further inundation as preparations for the upcoming Navratri rituals gather pace.
Restrictions Imposed at Two Temples
As a precautionary measure, prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) have been enforced at both the Bhattarika Temple and nearby Singhanath Temple in Badamba.
The restrictions have been put in place amid rising water levels around the two religious sites and are aimed at preventing devotees and members of the public from entering vulnerable areas.
Idol Shifting Plan Ready
According to the district administration, contingency arrangements have been kept ready to move the idol of Maa Bhattarika to a safer location if the flood situation worsens.
Officials said the shifting operation could be undertaken if the water level rises by another two feet, ensuring the safety of the deity and facilitating necessary protection measures.
Daily Rituals Continue
Despite the inundation around the temple, regular rituals and traditional worship of Maa Bhattarika are continuing, temple priest Sirish Rana said.
The administration is maintaining close watch on the water level and the condition of the temple premises as the situation evolves.
Devotees have been advised to avoid the restricted areas and cooperate with the safety measures imposed by the authorities.
Hirakud Discharge Raises Flood Concerns
The latest rise in water levels follows the opening of 28 sluice gates of the Hirakud Dam. The resulting increase in downstream water levels has affected several low-lying areas, including the vicinity of the Bhattarika shrine.
With Navratri approaching, authorities are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the safety of the temple, the deity and devotees.
