First-Ever Successful Treatment for Near-Rupturing Blood Vessel in Eastern India Using Innovative Cardiology Techniques

Mumbai / Kolkata, 12th February25: Medica Superspecialty Hospital, part of the Manipal Hospital group, achieved a groundbreaking milestone when a 90-year-old patient with life-threatening hemoptysis (uncontrollable bloody sputum/mucus) was successfully treated using cutting-edge technology. For the first time in interventional cardiology in Eastern India, Dr. Arindam Pande, Senior Consultant in the Department of Cardiology, Medica Superspecialty Hospital closed a large 20F (6.6 mm) access through sheaths using the Manta Device, a feat accomplished within just two minutes with the support of Dr. Ejaz Ahmed Bari, Radiologist, Medica Superspecialty Hospital and Arnab Dey, Chief Technologist, Cathlab, Medica Superspecialty Hospital.

In the first week of December 2024, Dinanath Bhattacharjee, a 90-year-old, resident of South Kolkata came to the hospital with severe coughing, spewing up of blood and needed high oxygen support. An initial chest X-ray showed lobar pneumonia, but further tests revealed a large aneurysm (a medical condition where the wall of the aorta, the largest blood vessel in the body, weakens and bulges outward like a balloon) in the descending thoracic aorta. This dangerously swollen blood vessel resembled a “baby heart” in the chest, pressing against the left lung and causing serious issues. Dr. Arnab Bera, Consultant, Respiratory Medicine, Medica Superspecialty Hospital referred the case to Dr. Arindam Pande for further treatment.

To address the critical condition, the medical team performed Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR), while explaining the procedure, Dr. Arindam Pande shared, “The procedure was performed by using a 120/30 mm stent graft. The Manta Device was then utilized to close the large 20F (6.6 mm) access site. This device is a specific medical tool used in interventional cardiology. It is designed to close large-bore arterial punctures made during catheter-based procedures. The device helps in achieving hemostasis (stopping bleeding) quickly and efficiently. The patients hemoptysis stopped the following morning, and he remained hemodynamically stable throughout recovery. The entire procedure was possible through the cooperation of the Cath Lab team, radiologists, critical care staff, and administrative support.

Dinanath Bhattacharjee, an ex-government employee, shared his situation and expressed, “When I came to Medica, I was struggling with severe breathing difficulties, and my family was deeply worried about my condition. Dr. Arnab Bera referred us to Dr. Arindam Pande, and after consulting with him, my family felt reassured. On December 7th, Dr. Pande performed the TEVAR procedure. I was discharged within a few days, and since then, I have been living a completely normal life, free from any breathing issues. Remarkably, I didnt experience any pain after the procedure. My family and I are forever grateful to the incredible medical team at Medica for their exceptional care and treatment.”

Dr. Ayanabh Debgupta, Regional Chief Operating Officer, Manipal Hospitals (East), expressed, “We have always been setting benchmarks in patient care. This is yet another first of the many we have achieved while offering the best cutting-edge treatment in Eastern India. Being the first one to use the Manta Device in Interventional Cardiology, team Manipal Hospitals would applaud the milestone achieved by Dr. Arindam Pande and his team. Our commitment remains steadfast in delivering quality care to our patients through the application of innovative technologies and treatments.”
